Assign a Manager for Cadence Check-Ins
Why do employee's enrolled in a cadence need a manager assigned?
What if I want a different manager than an employee's direct manager to approve cadence check-ins?
What happens when I assign a manager within a cadence?
How do I assign a manager to an employee in a cadence?
Why do employee's enrolled in a cadence need a manager assigned?
Check-ins generated from a cadence need a designated manager to approve those check-ins!
If an employee has a manager assigned within the "Manager" field in their user settings, that manager will be the default check-in approver for check-ins generated from cadences.
If an employee does not have a manager assigned within the "Manager" field in their user settings, a manager will need to be selected to approve the check-ins generated from the cadence. There is no managerial relationship created with this assignment, but rather the selected manager is only responsible for approving check-ins generated from the cadence.
Where Can I Find If a User Has a Direct Manager Set?
A user's direct manager will appear in the "Manager" field within User Management (left navigation > People > Users), in their user settings in the "Manager" field, and in the "Manager" field when clicking "View Details" on a user's personal dashboard.
If Alejandra was enrolled in a cadence, Beatriz would by default be the manager assigned to approve the check-ins generated from cadences where Alejandra is enrolled.

What if I want a different manager than an employee's direct manager to approve their cadence check-ins?
While a user's direct manager, the manager found within their user settings, will be the default, any user with manager permissions can be assigned as an employee's manager for the purpose of approving cadence check-ins!
Updating the manager who should approve an employee's cadence check-ins will be done after the employee is enrolled in the cadence. Learn how here.
What happens when I assign a manager within a cadence?
Assigning a manager to an employee in the context of a cadence does not make the employee a subordinate of the selected manager, but rather the selected manager will be serve as the approver of those employee's check-in generated from the cadence.
The employee's cadence check-ins will appear on the manager's managerial coaching timeline and will count towards their coaching analytics (# total check-ins, # completed check-ins, and check-in completion rate), but the employee is not considered a subordinate of the manager.
Since the employee is not considered a subordinate of the manager, none of the employee's metric data, including Activity and Objective score data, will be included in the manager's managerial metric totals. Additionally, the manager assigned within the context of a cadence will not be set as the "Manager" of the user within the employee's user settings.
Example:
Akeem and Melody were enrolled in the "Intro to 2023 Conversation Starter" cadence, but they do not have a direct manager set in their user settings.
Carson was assigned as Akeem and Melody's manager within the "Intro to 2023 Conversation Starter" cadence.
As a result, Carson is responsible for approving Akeem and Melody's check-ins that are generated from the "Intro to 2023 Conversation Starter" cadence.
The check-ins will appear on Carson's managerial dashboard and count towards Carson's towards coaching analytics (# total check-ins, # completed check-ins, and check-in completion rate), but Akeem and Melody are not considered Carson's subordinates.
View below of Akeem and Melody's cadence check-ins on Carson's Managerial Dashboard. The completed cadence check-ins, Akeem and Melody both completed 2 steps for a total of 4, are counting towards Carson's coaching analytics both on the managerial dashboard and within the Accountability tab.
Although Akeem and Melody's cadence check-ins count towards Carson's coaching analytics, Carson is not considered their manager and they are not considered subordinates of Carson.
None of Akeem's or Melody's metric data, including Activity and Objective score data, will be included in Carson's managerial totals.
Since Carson is not being set as Akeem or Melody's manager outside of the particular cadence, Carson will not be set as the "Manager" within Akeem or Melody's user settings.
Carson is only set as their manager to approve check-ins generated from the "Intro to 2023 Conversation Starter" cadence.
