Ambition Hierarchy Levels
In Ambition, you'll frequently see "Hierarchy Level" when selecting participants for a challenge, workflow, or goal. These hierarchy levels are based on the group types created within Ambition.
The hierarchy present in your Ambition instance will be dependent on the structure of your organization, package limits, and your permissions.
Because Ambition supports custom solutions, broad examples are used below.

Employee vs Employee challenge
Setting a collective goal for the employees you manage
Setting goals for each member of a Role or Team
Which Level Do I Choose?
Because Ambition is flexible, you have many options when it comes to customizing specifically who a goal, competition, or workflow should target.
When thinking about the level to target, visualize a scoreboard at an athletic event.
Team Scores
If two sports teams are playing, the scoreboard only shows two scores -- one collective score for each team.
You do not see a breakdown of which team members scored which points on the scoreboard because the target level was a team.
Individual Scores
At an event where individuals are competing (ex. golf, tennis) the scoreboard displays one score per player.
You do not see individual competitors's scores combined in any way on the scoreboard because they are competing as individuals, referred to as employees in Ambition.
Hierarchy Level follows the same thinking.
Example: Employee vs Employee Competition
The competition below would generate a separate score for each individual employee based on their own performance.
1. Select Hierarchy Level "Employees".
2. Choose the appropriate competitor selection.
Select all employees will place all the employees into a head to head competition.
Select employees within specific groups will allow you to select a certain group, placing just employees within that group into the challenge. Ex. Users Within Account Executives (Role).
Select specific employees will allow you to handpick the specific users you desire to compete with each other.
Select employees based on custom filters allows you to incorporate AND, OR, and NOT logic to correctly segment competition participants based on multiple group memberships
Example: Role vs Role Competition
The competition below would generate a collective score for each role based on the individual user's performance who belong to that role.
1. Select Hierarchy Level "Role".
2. Choose the appropriate Competitor Selection.
Select all roles will place all your roles head to head.
Select specific roles will allow you to handpick the specific roles you desire to compete with each other.
Example: Setting a Collective Goal for the Users You Manage
Special Note about selecting the "Manager" Hierarchy Level In Cases where a Manager Manages other Managers.
If Manager A is listed as a Manager B's manager within their User Settings, any of Manager B's direct reports will also be considered as users Manager A manages, or Manager A's subordinates.
This would generate one collective goal that all the users you manage work together to complete.
1. Select Hierarchy Level "Manager".
2. Choose Select specific managers as your Owner Selection Type.
3. Select your name from the manager options.
Example: Setting Goals for each Member of a Role or Team
This would generate multiple goals that each user will complete individually.
1. Select Hierarchy Level "Employees".
2. Choose Select employees within specific groups as your Owner Selection Type.
3. Select the respective role, team, etc from the options.
Note: You can select multiple groups!
Again, depending on the structure of your organization and your permission set your options may differ greatly.
Take time to learn about the group types your organization has in place and how you fit into them.
