Ambition Triggers
An Ambition Trigger is a data-driven push notification, commonly used to recognize a person/group for reaching a metric or record level threshold.
Triggers can also be used as a means of proactive notification when Metric thresholds are not being met.
We recommend walking through the entire document if this is the first Trigger you've created. If you need to navigate to a specific step of Trigger creation, select the appropriate step:
Create a Trigger
The number of Triggers that can be created is dependent on package.
Package | # |
Recognize | 10 |
Gamify and Coach | 25 |
Pro | 50 |
Enterprise | Unlimited |
1. Create a new trigger via the quick actions button, Create a Notification, or through the left navigation > Triggers.
2. Click the green +Create Trigger button.
3. Fill out the Trigger form.
Basics
Field | Field Description |
Trigger Name |
Required. The name will be displayed within a Trigger email, Ambition TV and/or Slack Notification |
Description |
Required. Description of the behavior the Trigger is recognizing. Helpful for when a Trigger is name "You're on Fire!" and see the description is labeled "100+ Activity Score". |
Frequency
Notification Frequency: Options allow for customization regarding when you want to receive the notification.
Frequency | Frequency Description |
Real-Time |
Trigger will fire as soon as the criteria is met. |
Daily |
Provides a Time and Time Zone drop down so you can select the specific hour of your desired notification. |
Weekly |
Provides a Day, Time, and Time Zone option. Perfect for mid-week of end-of-week check ins. |
End of Month |
Trigger will fire on the last day of the calendar month Great for assessing month totals and goals. |
Target Users
Who should this Trigger fire for? User will refer to an individual.
Because a specific User Field is utilized, Record Based Triggers can only be utilized when the Trigger's Hierarchy Level = User.
Logic
When selecting the Trigger Type you have 2 options: Metric or Record.
Type | Type Description |
Metric |
Ambition will monitor existing metrics for thresholds and milestones. |
Record |
Ambition will scan incoming records for a specific behavior. Can only be utilized with Real-Time frequency and Hierarchy = User Triggers. |

Metric Trigger Type
Triggers will monitor existing metrics for thresholds and milestones.
use case: Trigger when 10+ Discovery Meetings have been set in a day.
If Hierarchy Level = User is selected in the Target Users, you will see a Metric Field dropdown.
Metric Field -- Value vs Target
Value: A Value-based Trigger will be based on an absolute number
example use case: Trigger when 60+ Calls have been made today
Target: A Target-based Trigger will be based on a User's Percent-to-Target
If your Organization utilizes Activity Scores, you can create Target-based Triggers for metrics that are part of individual users's Scorecards based on the Activity Score's timeframe.
example use case: Trigger when a User achieves 150% of their Daily Call Target.
To complete Metric Trigger type logic, you will need to define the Time Frame, Metric, Operator, and Value/Target for the Trigger to fire.
Time Frame options include:
- Daily
- Weekly (Monday - Sunday)
- Monthly (Calendar Month)
- Quarterly (Calendar Quarter)
- Annual (Calendar Year)
Time Frame will provide the context for the threshold and milestone.
ex. Do you wish for the Trigger to fire when a User has reached 100+ calls in a Day or 100+ Calls in a Week?
Learn more about Ambition's Time Frame definitions here.
The Metric dropdown will prompt you to select the Metric you'd like the Trigger to fire for.
Note: If this is a Target based Trigger, ensure the Metric selected is actively a part of the Target User's Activity Score.
Operator options include:
- Less Than
- Less/Equal To
- Greater/Equal To
- Greater Than
You'll notice there is not an Equals operator choice. This is to prevent thresholds from not being recognized! Ex. Trigger is desired to recognize Users when their Daily Activity Score = 100. An Activity Score that jumps from 98 to 101 would miss out on recognition with an explicit Equals operator in place.
OR
Define the Value/Target at which you wish the Trigger to fire.
Record Trigger Type
Triggers will scan incoming records for a specific behavior. You will need to know the Object and Fields that you want to access.
use case: Trigger every time a Discovery Meeting is set by a User.
Things to Note:
Only Real-Time Triggers (NOT daily, monthly, or End of Month frequencies) can access the Record Type option.
Because a specific User Field is utilized, Record Based Triggers can only be utilized when the Trigger's Hierarchy Level = User.
Object, User, and Date Field selections will tell Ambition where to look for applicable records, who should be recognized, and when to fire.
Note: If the selected Date Field is either in the past or future, Ambition will not fire a Trigger. This is to prevent updated records from being recognized multiple time.
Additionally, Ambition will not fire Triggers for Users who are not in Ambition.
After selecting the Object and Fields, click the blue Add Filter button to include any needed filters to determine the criteria needed for the Trigger to fire.
Incorporate AND/OR logic as needed in the Filter Logic text field.
Notifications
Here you can customize who is going to be notified and how that notification will occur.
Multiple means of notifications can be utilized on a single Trigger!
Notification Option | Notification Description |
My Email Address |
An email will be sent to the Trigger creator's email address. |
Employee Email Address |
An email will be sent to the selected email address. A recipient drop down will appear listing all Users with active Ambition accounts. Great for notifying multiple Managers on a single Trigger. |
Custom Email Address |
An email will be sent to the input email address. Use for any one/any group/distribution list who needs to receive Trigger updates, but DOES NOT have an Ambition account. ex. salesteam@yourcompany.com or vpsales@yourcompany.com Example Trigger Email Notification Pro Tip: Ensure that any distributions lists have the proper protocols adjusted to allow Ambition emails to be received. |
Trigger Initiator Email Address(es) |
Will populate only when User is selected as the Trigger's Hierarchy Level. An email will be sent to any User(s) that fire off the Trigger! |
Slack |
An option for Real-Time Triggers only. If your Organization has setup the Public Access Ambition <> Slack Integration, you will be able to select any public channel from the "Which Slack Channel" drop down menu. Additionally, any private channels that the Ambition Slackbot has been explicitly invited to will appear here.
If your Organization has setup the Invite Only Ambition <> Slack Integration, you will only be able to select channels that have explicitly invited the Ambition Slackbot. Unable to find a newly created Slack channel, reach out to gethelp@ambition.com for assistance. |
Ambition TV |
An option for Real-Time Triggers only. A drop down will appear listing all existing Ambition TVs. Will send a notification to the respective Ambition TV(s). |
If you select an Ambition TV as a Notification, you'll have a few more optional choices for notifications.
Optional TV Selections | Selection Behavior |
Anthem Volume |
Determine the volume of the YouTube video (not the TV's volume). You can set a Trigger's Intro/Anthem volume so that more important Triggers are louder than others. Take public recognition to the next level by getting everybody's attention! The choice is yours! |
TV Intro Sound |
There's currently a five-second "introduction" for each TV Trigger before the Anthem starts playing where Trigger details are displayed front-and-center. You can now set an optional audio clip (like a gong) to play during this introduction. |
TV Anthem Override |
A Trigger specific anthem can optionally be used to override any User and Group Anthems set. |
Messages
Message: You can opt to include a message on the TV or in your emails. Especially helpful if sending out to individual Users. We offer to dynamically update the message to include the Team, Role, or User's name if you utilize the {{ Entity.Name }} code.
The choices presented in the Template Variables are entirely dependent on the data sent to Ambition and the Type of Trigger:
Records based Triggers can display Record level details
Metric based can display the Entity Name and Metric Value.
Message Fields
Option for Real-time Trigger Only
Click on the blue Template Variables to automatically copy the respective fields into your Messages.
Again, for Metric based Triggers, you will only be able to display the high level details like User Name and Metric Value.
Note for Salesforce: Is there a field you'd like to use in a message that's not shown here like Opportunity, Account, or Lead Name? Check out out to add Meta Fields to your Triggers!
If you are adding brand new Meta Fields to an existing Trigger Message, you will need to reselect the appropriate Object in Step 4. Logic of a Trigger's setup.

Images or GIFs
Option for non-TV Triggers
Utilizing the provided Markdown syntax, [ImageName](https://image-link.img), you will include the name of the image and the URL.
Note: Ensure the image name is one word or is not separated by spaces.
The Image Name is what will appear if the image cannot load or if the user incorporates a screen reader.
4. Click the green Save Trigger button.
