Should I Use a Metric Based Alert or Records Based Alert?

Last updated: November 5, 2026

Metric Based Alerts and Records Based Alerts both send a notification as soon as something happens, but they watch different things. A Metric Based Alert watches an employee's metric attainment, while a Records Based Alert monitors individual records' field values.

Use a Metric Based Alert for Employee Milestones and Targets

A Metric Based Alert watches a Metric's total for a person or Group and sends a notification when it reaches the value you set, such as a fourth meeting booked this week. It will send once per person for each time period, and its message can include the person's name and the Metric value.

Use a Records Based Alert for Notable Record Details

A Records Based Alert watches individual records, such as opportunities or meetings, and sends a notification for every record that matches your filters. Its message can include fields from the record, such as the account name or amount. Records Based Alerts can only watch records for individuals, not Groups.

Examples

  • Use a Metric Based Alert to recognize a rep who reaches 10 demos this month.

  • Use a Records Based Alert to recognize when an employee holds a demo with someone who has a VP title.

  • Use a Metric Based Alert to shoutout an employee who closed $1,000,000 in new revenue this quarter.

  • Use a Records Based Alert to shout an employee who closed a new deal worth over $1,000,000.
